Modeling UN clubs in youth centers

2023-05-29

Model UN is an educational role-playing activity where students assume the roles of diplomats from different countries to engage in discussions and find solutions for global challenges.

The primary objective of Model UN is to familiarize young individuals with civic principles, efficient communication, globalization, and the art of multilateral diplomacy. Additionally, the simulated experience cultivates a range of valuable skills, such as effective communication, leadership, teamwork, and critical thinking.

The Model UN format, developed by the United Nations Association of Georgia, provides an authentic simulation of the actual workings of the United Nations. It grants young ambassadors a unique opportunity to actively engage in the processes involved in resolving global issues through international diplomacy.

What is the overarching goal of the USAID Unity Through Diversity Program Youth Centers and Model UN Clubs?

The USAID Unity Through Diversity Program operates Youth Centers (YCs) that serve as inclusive educational and civic spaces throughout the country. YCs actively promote the participation of young individuals in local and national civic and economic activities.

As part of the USAID Unity Through Diversity Program, the carefully selected two individuals from each Youth Center underwent comprehensive training. These trained mentors will then utilize their acquired knowledge and skills to establish Model UN Clubs within their respective Youth Centers.

Model UN Clubs will be established in the following cities: Tbilisi (specifically the Youth Centers of Ilia State University and Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University), Kutaisi, Zugdidi, Ozurgeti, Batumi, Telavi, Marneuli, Ninotsmanda, Akhalkalaki, Akhaltsikhe, Gori, and Akhmeta.

Participation in the Model UN Club will be exclusively open to members of YCs, operating under the USAID Unity Through Diversity Program.

How is the Model UN implementation structured?

Within the Model UN Club, mentors conduct training sessions for club members based on a pre-designed 3-month program. The primary objective of this training is to equip club members with the necessary skills and knowledge for local and inter-center (national) Model UN sessions. In particular, with the support of the YC, the Model UN will be organized for the members of the Model UN Club. Through these activities, the most outstanding delegates from each center will be identified and selected. To foster motivation and engagement between centers, the delegates chosen at the local level will have the opportunity to compete with one other in the national Model UN. This competition will provide a platform for delegates to showcase their abilities and represent their respective centers on a national scale.
