The United Nations: Promoting Peace and Progress Since 1945

Established in 1945, the United Nations (UN) is dedicated to fostering international peace, security, human rights, and sustainable development across its 193 member states. Georgia joined the organization as its 179th member on July 31, 1992. For 79 years, the UN has worked tirelessly to maintain peace and advocate for a better future through its main bodies and specialized councils.

What is Model UN?

Model United Nations (Model UN) is an educational simulation that brings the processes and debates of the UN General Assembly to life. It offers a unique platform for young people interested in diplomacy and international relations to experience the roles of diplomats and policymakers. Participants in Model UN sessions develop vital skills in communication, leadership, negotiation, and public speaking.

Opportunities for Youth in Georgia: Engage with the Model UN

For several years, with the support of USAID, the United Nations Association of Georgia (UNA Georgia) has been empowering young people aged 14-29 from across the country to participate in Model UN activities. The initiative offers training sessions, simulations, and the opportunity to take part in both regional and national conferences.

Insights from Model UN Participants

Giorgi Menteshashvili from the Dmanisi Youth Center shares how Model UN influenced his personal growth:

"Model UN had a great impact on my personality. It taught me to be patient and listen to people better, get to know them and discover them. It helped me improve my communication skills, and I'm sure that everything that Model UN taught me will follow me for the rest of my life."
Giorgi took part in Model UN for the first time this year at the summer school held by UNA Georgia. He enjoyed being a delegate, exploring information about different countries, and found the experience invaluable for developing his writing skills.
"There are many reasons why I would advise every young person to participate in Model UN. It develops and discovers people's personal qualities, such as teamwork and leadership skills."

Tekla Soselia, from the Ozurgeti Youth Center, emphasizes the life-changing impact of Model UN:

"If not the experience gained in Model UN, I would still be at a much lower level in many things."
Tekla has participated in multiple Model UN events and earned the title of Best Delegate. She vividly recalls her first experience:
"When we arrived at the first committee meeting of the Model UN National Conference, I realized this was the place where a new, more successful phase of my life would begin. I thought: 'This is what I want to do for the rest of my life.'
Model UN gave her a new purpose — to pursue a career in diplomacy and international relations.
"Model UN gave me a new goal in my life — to become a delegate, a diplomat myself, to represent my country and fight as much as possible to improve it."

Oto Shanava, a trainer from the Zugdidi Youth Center, reflects on his journey:

"I remember the moment during my first experience at Model UN when I gave my first welcome speech. I couldn’t demonstrate my skills and abilities as I had hoped. This motivated me to work even harder, and I successfully improved my future speeches."
Oto’s interest in Model UN began at the summer school organized by UNA Georgia. The experience inspired him to become a trainer.
"Participating in Model UN had a transformative effect on me. It helped me enhance my communication, public speaking, negotiation, and critical thinking abilities."
Oto also values the friendships formed during Model UN:
"I met many talented and intelligent young people, and we quickly found common ground and formed lasting connections."
